Salt water, porridge, podcasts, PJs: The simple self-care rituals that actually work c/o the Shelf Help Clubbers

Our BOTM in May this year was the best-selling Self-Care for the Real World, from sisters, wellness pioneers and Kate Moss’s favourite yogis Nadia Narain and Katia Narain Phillips.

The wellbeing experts have spent decades helping others to feel their best. But it took them a bit longer to learn to care for themselves, and in this book they share the small, achievable steps they have picked up on a lifetime’s journey towards self-care, and how we can all apply them to our life, wherever we are.

The book is filled with nuggets of nourishment and wisdom, but it also inspired a raft of brilliant self-care advice from our community of readers and seekers, and as we prepare to workshop with Nadia & Katia at our 2nd Birthday Party next week (did we mention we are TWO and having a ruddy great party to celebrate?! Get your tickets to the big bash HERE) we thought it was a great time to share some of the sage advice that came from the Shelf Help Club’s digital family…

OUR BEST SELF-CARE RITUALS

by the Shelf Help Clubbers

  1. ADVENTURE & NO PHONE

@anddaysbefore says: “Escaping to the hills, either with friends or solo! 🏔 The weaker the phone signal the better! Taking that time to really put things into perspective I learned the benefits myself when I started to experience it but I decided to try after following so many adventure people on Instagram!”

2. HOT WATER TO START THE DAY

@katemcmahon1 says: “Before my day begins, I (try to) always make hot water and lemon and take few quiet moments to myself before the day begins. My mum takes lemon and water religiously and there is something about this cleansing drink and early morning that sets the tone to my day! I feel off when I don’t do it.”

3. CHECKING IN WITH CRAVINGS

@carolinehelenberry says: “Self-care for me involves taking a moment to truly check in with my mind and body, and doing whatever it is craving most - and not feeling guilty about it! Whether that is eating some chocolate, chilling on the sofa or getting some tasks ticked off!”

4. AN EVENING ROUTINE

@evolvingwomanhood says: “My most important self care rituals are 2 things: making sure I drink water everyday, and completing my evening routine inspired by my childhood! I take a long relaxing shower, wash my face, brush my teeth and I slip into comfy pyjamas or a slip, lay out my clothes for the next day, and finish with a cup of tea and a book.”

5. PODCASTS & PAMPERING

@teatime.english says: “For me it's definitely a pampering session in the bath. I love bubbles, a self-help podcast such as @chloebrotheridge, a body scrub, facemask etc. I didn't learn this from anyone in particular but it's a great way to take time for myself, relax and make myself feel better.”

6. TEA & TUNES

@justhappyyyy says: “When I feel like if I really need to care for myself I make a mug of tea, take a long bath with good music on and a great book in my hands and make a face and hair mask and make my nails. After that I always feel good and beautiful and I am not stressed or anything like that anymore.🤗”

7. PORRIDGE & BOB PROCTOR

@geraldine.jeffers says: “It’s a meditation for me, doesn’t have to be very long, but it provides an essential reset. Louise Hay 🌟 & Wayne Dyer ✨✨ first inspired me, and currently listening to Bob Proctor. Also a very wise sage, my dad swears by a cup of hot water and porridge every morning. He’s 86, bless 🙏.”

8. A QUICK DIP

@vikkimcgrath says: “Weekly swim in the Irish Sea with my #smimclubgals/mermaids 🌊🧜🏼‍♀️ There is no better feeling! ✨✨✨”

9. MORE SLEEP

@manclou999 says: “I'm not very good at Self Care but I'm learning and trying as feel overwhelmed far too much! I've started to go to bed earlier than usual so I can get up a bit earlier than everyone else to have a cup of tea on my own whilst it's quiet. And I've begun daily guided meditation which I love! 💖

10. GET MOVING

@franbailey says: “Movement. Whether stretching, a Crossfit class, yoga, or a brisk walk. It helps me think clearly, get energy flowing, and I usually feel better immediately. Self-learned!”
